PYRENEES – ENDURO
The Pyrenees form a mountain range in the north of the peninsula that serves as a natural border between Spain and France. In spring, as the warmth arrives and the snow disappears, the area’s ski resorts close to make way for the bike parks. The season begins!
At MTBSPAIN we’ve picked four bike parks in the area that we’ll visit over the course of a week. They’re all very close to each other, each one just over an hour from the others.
First off, in Andorra we have the best-known of them all: Vallnord, a regular stop on the DH World Cup no less. But there’s life beyond this bike park. In Catalonia we find La Molina Bike Park, while on the French side of the Pyrenees we have two more resorts: Les Angles and Ax-Les-Thermes. Three countries and four bike parks in one week!
TRAILS
First, we have to talk about Vallnord. This bike park is the biggest and best-known of the ones we’ll visit. It has a gondola and two chairlifts that give us access to more than 40km of rideable trails spread across more than 20 runs, including the famous World Cup track.
We also have to mention La Molina, the Catalan bike park has a gondola and a chairlift. It’s home to 13 downhill runs adding up to more than 27km of rideable trails. It also has a dirt and wood park area at the bottom for the more freestyle-minded riders.
We move over to the French side. Here we find Les Angles. This bike park has 7 runs adding up to more than 50km of rideable trails. It stands out for how different its descents are from one another, ranging from jump lines and huge tabletops to steep, technical descents through roots. It’s also known for the thorough, ongoing maintenance its trails receive.
Finally we find the lesser-known French bike park of Ax-les-Thermes. It’s the most enduro-oriented of them all, its descents are generally fast, flowy singletracks. It has a gondola and a chairlift to access its 8 runs.
