Cycling the Camino de Santiago: what you need to know
Cycling the Camino de Santiago lets you cover in one week what takes a month on foot. These are the real distances, the bike to choose and how to earn your Compostela.
How many days do you need?
A reasonably fit cyclist covers 40 to 75 km a day on the Camino, less than on the road: the surface is uneven, you ride through villages and you stop to eat and visit.
| Route | Distance | Riding stages |
|---|---|---|
| León – Santiago (Camino Francés) | ≈ 335 km | 6 |
| Lisbon – Santiago (Portuguese Way) | ≈ 354 km | 8 |
| Gijón – Santiago (Northern Way) | ≈ 390 km | 8 |
| Madrid – Santiago | ≈ 640 km | 11 |
| Roncesvalles – Santiago (full Camino Francés) | ≈ 750 km | 13 |
Which bike should you ride?
Mountain bike: the safest choice for the rocky sections of the Montes de León and the descent from O Cebreiro. Gravel bike: faster on the flat, but not ideal for the Northern Way. E-bike: the most popular option today; it evens out fitness levels so the whole group rides together. On our tours the e-bike is included.
How do you earn the Compostela by bike?
Cyclists must ride at least the last 200 km into Santiago and get their pilgrim passport stamped every day. All our routes meet this requirement.
Self-guided or with a guide and support vehicle?
| Self-guided with panniers | Luggage transfer only | MTBSPAIN | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luggage | You carry 10–15 kg | Moved hotel to hotel | Carried by the support vehicle |
| Guide on the route | No | No | Yes, riding with the group |
| Mechanical assistance | Only what you can fix | No | Yes, on the route |
| If you cannot finish a stage | Taxi at your cost | Taxi at your cost | The van picks you up |
| Support | On your own | Office hours | 24 hours |
When is the best time?
From April to October. May, June and September are the best months: mild temperatures and fewer pilgrims than in August.
Frequently asked questions
What is included in the Camino de Santiago by bike?
A guide riding with you, a 24-hour support vehicle with mechanical assistance, luggage transfer from hotel to hotel, mid-stage refreshments and selected accommodation at the end of each day.
How many kilometres a day?
Between 40 and 80 km, depending on the stage and the route. The group sets the pace, and the support vehicle is always close if you want a lift.
Do I need to be very fit?
No. On an e-bike anyone who can ride a bike can do it. Both e-bikes and normal bikes can share the same group without anyone being left behind.
Does it count for the Compostela?
To earn the Compostela you must cycle at least the last 200 km into Santiago. Our routes cover that comfortably; if you choose a shorter version we will tell you before you book.
Can I bring my own bike?
Either way. Bring yours or hire one of ours: mountain, gravel or electric. Helmet, phone mount and wide saddle come at no extra cost.
Can it be done privately or as a company trip?
Yes. Any route can be arranged privately for friends, families or companies, on the dates you choose.
