From the border with Portugal to the heart of Galicia, the Portuguese Way is a route that invites reflection, connection with the land, and an encounter with centuries of history. Throughout this journey you will walk among medieval fortresses, Galician forests, and charming towns, drawing step by step closer to the majestic Cathedral of Santiago.


Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tui

Your adventure begins in Tui, on the banks of the Miño River. The town, crowned by its impressive Gothic cathedral, retains the charm of its cobblestone streets and its border-town atmosphere. You can stroll to the fortress of Valença, already on Portuguese territory, and enjoy the cultural fusion between Galicia and Portugal.

Day 2: Tui – O Porriño (16.1 km · 4 hours)

The first day takes you from the old town of Tui through the rural paths of the Val da Louriña. After a brief initial climb, the trail descends toward O Porriño, where its artisan bread, famous throughout the region, awaits you.

Day 3: O Porriño – Redondela / Arcade (15.5 km · 4 hours)

The Camino crosses rural landscapes and small inland villages until it reaches open views over the Vigo estuary. Redondela, with its railway bridge and pilgrim history, or Arcade, known for its oysters, will be the day’s final destination.

Day 4: Redondela / Arcade – Pontevedra (19.6 km · 5 hours)

Today you will walk one of the most memorable stages: you will cross the historic Roman bridge of Pontesampaio, the setting of the famous battle against Napoleonic troops. Your arrival in Pontevedra will welcome you with its old town full of squares and the iconic Church of A Peregrina.

Day 5: Pontevedra – Caldas de Reis (21.1 km · 5 hours)

A stage marked by natural beauty. The paths take you through native forests, streams, and old bridges. In Caldas de Reis, you can relax in its well-known thermal waters and enjoy a walk along the river.

Day 6: Caldas de Reis – Padrón (18.6 km · 4 hours)

The second-to-last stage leads you to Padrón, a place linked to the Jacobean tradition and birthplace of literary figures such as Rosalía de Castro and Camilo José Cela. It is also home to the famous peppers… some are spicy, some are not.

Day 7: Padrón – Santiago de Compostela (24.3 km · 6 hours)

The final day will take you through valleys, chapels, and small villages until you reach the Sanctuary of A Escravitude. The final climb culminates in a triumphant entrance through Santiago’s historic center. In front of the Cathedral, you will celebrate reaching your goal with the emotion of someone who has lived something profound and unforgettable.
